Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) has three campuses, all within short distance to Barcelona.  UAB was founded in 1968 just a few years before the end of Franco’s rule.  Today more than 40,000 students have chosen to study at one of UAB’s three campuses.

Academics
Courses available for exchange students are through UAB’s Regular Studies program in health sciences, experimental sciences and biosciences, engineering, social sciences, the humanities, and fine arts.  The School of Education is renowned across Spain and the Faculty of Economics is known for its commitment to providing internship experiences for students.  Students are able to take language courses in a wide variety of foreign languages.

Housing & Meals
UAB has various sized flats in La Vila Universitaria for students who wish to live on campus.  In addition, the ETC Office, Edifici d Etudiants de la UAB, provides information and advice on renting off-campus private accommodation.  Their website is http://etc.uab.cat/habitatge.php.

Cost Information
Students pay their regular UM tuition and their room & board in Spain.  Depending on the type of flat, rooms in La Vila Universitaria cost between 250€ and 500€ per month.  Food costs approximately 250€ to 350€ per month.   Students are required to apply for their student visa in person at the Spanish consulate in the US with jurisdiction over their state of residence.  Students should budget for this travel expense and US $100 for the student visa.  Financial aid may be applied to tuition, living and travel expenses while on this program.

Barcelona, Spain
The City
UAB’s main campus is located in Bellaterra, a twenty-five minute train ride away from Barcelona’s city center.  Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a unique region of Spain with its own language and culture.  Set beside both the Mediterranean Sea and the Montseratt mountain range, the city rivals any in Europe for natural beauty.  A boardwalk lines the four kilometers of beach through the city, and there are numerous stops at cafes and tapas restaurants to take it all in.
Perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of Barcelona is the region’s beloved artist and architect, Antoni Gaudi.  His unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia enchants and inspires any visitor.  Or spend the day engrossed in his public sculpture park, Park Guell.   Other attractions in the city include shopping and watching street performers on La Rambla, exploring the winding alleys of the Gothic Quarter, and picking up fresh produce at La Boqueria.  Additionally, Barcelona is naturally connected to Europe’s high speed train system that can escort you to nearby French, Spanish, or Portuguese cities.  Skiers can take days trips to the nearby Pyrenees mountains.
