University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania (UTAS) was founded in 1890 and offers a wide range of subjects for both undergraduates and graduates and it consistently ranks among Australia’s top ten universities. UTas has two campuses, one in Tasmania’s capital of Hobart, the other in Launceston. Remote and stunningly beautiful, Tasmania’s attractions rival that of mainland Australia, and it is tiny in comparison. The island is a magnet for the outdoorsy type: hikers, kayakers, cyclists, and rafters take advantage of Tasmania’s vast, uninhabited landscape and natural treasures. ‘Tassie’ also has a reputation for gourmet food and wine, and has an evolving art scene in it’s urban areas. In 2012 UTAS was voted in the top 10 research universities in Tasmania and in the top 2% world-wide.
UTas offers classes in the following fields: Arts, Business, Education, Health Sciences, Science, Engineering and Technology, Law, Medicine, and Maritime. For detailed information on classes visit UTas’s website.
Students register for classes upon arrival at UTas; space will be held in the courses UM students request.. Students should enroll in four 10-credit courses at UTas (10 UTas credits = 4 UM credits).
Semester 1: mid-February to late June
Semester 2: mid-July to mid-November
Housing & Meals
The Hobart campus offers residential colleges (dorm-style lodging), shared houses, or on-campus university apartments. The Launceston campus offers on-campus apartment style housing. Students living in apartment style accommodation (self-catering) are responsible for preparing their own meals; cooking utensils are not provided. Meals are also available at food halls at reduced costs to those living on-campus.
Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart, is also Australia’s second oldest city. Mt. Wellington provides a dramatic backdrop for this lively harbor city, which sits on the banks of the Derwent River just before it reaches the ocean. Hobart is home to the University’s main campus which has a student population of 9,000 students and is located in Sandy Bay, a suburb of the city.
Tassie’s second largest city is the location of the second campus. Launceston, or ‘Lonnie’, has the rough-around-the-edges charm of a city with a frontier past. In it’s early days, Lonnie was a wild place much like the American West. Today Lonnie can’t be considered as cosmopolitan as Hobart, but it still has the classic Victorian neighborhoods one would see in any Australian city. With a UTas campus and great restaurant scene, Lonnie is a balance of Australia’s past and present.
