Beppu, Japan
The City

Beppu is the second largest city in Oita Prefecture, located on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu.  Millions of domestic visitors come each year to see, and to soak, in the world’s second largest outflow of natural hot springs (onsens).  The Yamanami Highway heading out of Beppu leads to the mountains and rolling plateaus of the Aso caldera, the world’s largest volcanic crater.  The area is still very much alive, and many visitors take the cable car to peer into its steaming caldera.  Another local attraction, Mt. Takasaki, is located just 15 minutes south of Beppu and is home to hundreds of wild monkeys.
Beppu itself is a city full of the traditional wooden architecture that typifies Japan.  The old-style winding streets surrounding the hot springs offer intriguing pathways to Shinto shrines, old shops, and delicious restaurants.  The city also supports extracurricular clubs in martial arts, pottery, traditional music, and painting among others.
Fukuoka City, the largest city on Kyushu, is a two hour drive from Beppu, and it offers a fast-paced urban atmosphere.
