Lyon
The City
The second largest city in France, Lyon is the capital of the Rhône-Alpes region.  The city is a blend of historic and contemporary, with both urban areas and green spaces.  Lyon’s history dates back to the Roman Empire in the 1st Century BC, and the city’s many museums and historic buildings are testaments to its role as a commercial hub for France for the last 500 years.  The old town is preserved and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The area provides for ample opportunity to feast on the best of traditional French cuisine.  Try Lyon’s specialties, boeuf bourguignon and escargot.  Cultural exhibits in the city are plentiful  and include an opera house, theatres and cinemas, and art galleries– contemporary and ancient.   More than 100,000 students contribute to the city’s vibrant character and charm, adding  a youthful element to just about every neighborhood.
Just north of the city is Beaujolais country, one of the most famous French wine producing areas.  The French Alps are to the East providing areas for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.  There are many ski resorts within 2 to 3 hours of the city.
