Universidad de Los LagosUniversidad de Los Lagos (ULA) was founded in 1993. Undergraduate students may choose between four campuses: the main campus in Osorno, an extended campus in Puerto Montt, & 2 branch campuses in Santiago & Coyhaigue. The Osorno campus gives students the advantages of a beautiful location in an approachable-sized city.
The language of instruction at ULA is Spanish and has course offerings in: Architecture, Political & Administrative Sciences, Engineering, Nutrition, Marine Biology, Education, Social Work, Chemistry & Biology, Nursing, & Kinesiology. Info on courses can be found through the Pregrado link and then through each campus’s degree options.
Housing & Meals
Students may choose to live with a Chilean family, in a private apartment off campus, or across the street from campus in a hostel with housing for international students. ULA will select home stay families for students. Meals are available at the university dining hall on the Osorno campus.
Students pay their regular tuition to UM and their room and board in Chile. The total cost for housing and meals in the home stay is CLP138,750/month. Apartments costs approximately CLP92,500/month, meals not included. A student visa for study in Chile costs US$100 and requires an FBI background check that takes up to 3 months to process before applying for the visa. UM financial aid can be applied to tuition, living and travel expenses while on this program.
Students will register for classes upon arrival in Chile. A minimum full-time load is 180 hours of class per semester, which transfers to 12 UM credits per semester. Most students take four to five classes per term.
Program dates reflect ULA’s southern hemisphere schedule.
Semester 1: March to July
Semester 2: Late July to December
Osorno and Puerto Montt, Chile
ULA’s main campus is located in Osorno, Chile. The city stands at the confluence of the Rahue & Damas Rivers, at the center of the Lakes Region of Southern Chile. The city is the gateway to numerous recreational areas, lakes, mountains, & hot springs, located east-southeast of the city. Numerous National Parks cab also be reached on the other side of the Andes Mountains. One of ULA’s satellite campuses is located in Puerto Montt, another city in Southern Chile, which is also located in the Lakes region. The area is dotted with heavily German influenced towns, and offers an interesting fusion of cultures. Puerto Montt has a fresh fish market, Angelmo, worth exploring for the vibrant colors of the buildings, glimpses at southern hemisphere fish, & perhaps a freshly grilled lunch.
Chile is an intriguing country, with its long & narrow land area, beaches, coastline, the Andes mountains, farmland & wineries are almost literally smashed into the same vicinity. Students can try various outdoor activities such as surfing, hiking, biking, kayaking, climbing, horseback riding, skiing, & tango dancing.
