Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, has a surprising cultural diversity for such a small population, and is a picturesque blend of colonial Spanish, Italian, and Art Deco styles. Many Argentines, Brazilians, and Chileans come here to relax during their summer break and bask on the white sandy beaches.
Montevideo may be the only large city in Uruguay, but it’s also one of South America’s liveliest. Many of the city’s public spaces are being rejuvenated, including the Cuidad Vieja, the historic heart of the city, where older buildings are being restored, with characteristic South American colorful flare, to make way for new life in the city. Uruguayan and foreign cultural centers, music venues, theaters, embassies, museums, and tango dance clubs are popping up throughout the city. In fact, tango originated in the streets of Montevideo.
Located on the bay of Rio de la Plata, Montevideo is the center of a large amount of sea-going trade, fishing, banking, tourism, and other features of a harbor city. Montevideo has been ranked the highest quality of life of any city in South America.
