Taichung, Taiwan
The City

The Republic of China today consists of the island of Taiwan, located 100 miles off Asia’s mainland in the Pacific Ocean.  It is slightly larger than the areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut.  Taiwan is divided by a mountain range that runs from north to south, rising sharply on the east coast and descending gradually to a broad western plain, where the cities are concentrated.
Taiwanese culture is very similar to that of China’s mainland; it also includes aspects of both Taiwan’s aboriginal cultures and industrial modernity.  The Taiwanese take health and longevity very seriously.  Many practice taijiquan- slow motion shadow boxing- for exercise and as an art form.  In the early morning hours you will often see groups practicing the gliding motions as the sun rises.
Taichung, where PU is located, is Taiwan’s third largest city and is located in the west-central region of the island.  The city is a distribution center for the rice, sugarcane, and banana crops grown in the surrounding area.  A noted educational and cultural center, it is the home of the Chinese National Central Museum, as well as excellent art and science museums.
