Universitat PotsdamThe Universitat Postdam (UP) is one of the youngest, yet attractively located academic institutions in Germany. Its buildings are situated in close proximity to the palaces and parks of Potsdam. The University itself uses many historic buildings for its campus and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Even with its short history, UP is fast becoming an important address for modern research and scientific development.
The language of instruction at UP is German. Classes are offered in the following faculties: Philosophy, Humanities, Law, Economics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. Two-week preparatory German classes are offered for international students before the start of each semester. Advanced German classes are offered by the Language Centre, though no beginner classes are offered.
Housing & Meals
Students may live in residence halls, or off-campus in a flat. Cooking and laundry facilities are available on each floor of the residence halls. Cafeterias and mensas are located at each of UP’s three campuses.
Students pay their regular tuition to UM, and their room and board in Potsdam. Expected cost of living in Potsdam is 739 EUR per month. Rent costs between 266 EUR per month, plus a 200 EUR first month’s deposit. Food is estimated at 147 Euros per month. UM financial aid can be applied towards tuition, living and travel expenses while on this program.
Students register for classes upon arrival in Potsdam. The minimum full-time class load is 24 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits per semester, which transfers to 12 UM credits per semester.
Winter semester: mid October to early February
Summer semester: mid April to late July.
Potsdam, located just south of Berlin, was once a city of kings and royal residences, and today is the capital of Brandenburg. In the heart of Prussia, Potsdam is famous for its palaces and parks, gardens and villas, and its numerous museums. Potsdam has evolved from a military post to a city of films, media, and universities. It has a reputation as a city of learning and research, whose world-wide reputation rests upon work in the natural sciences, in physics and earth sciences.
