The city is located on the shores of Finland’s largest lake, Lake Saimaa, which is connected to the Gulf of Finland by 30 mile-long Saimaa Canal. Lappeenranta is Finland’s 13th largest city but is the largest inland port city in the country because of its waterway to the sea.
Lappeenranta is the capital city of the southern Karelia region which has been called the ‘soul of Finland’ because of its distinct, culture, and longstanding history. People here, like most Finns, are proud of their heritage and maintain Finnish traditions through food and dress. They are also hardworking (the region has multiple million-euro timber industries), but take time to enjoy the region’s natural beauty. Finland is known as the land of lakes and forests because it is covered by both. It an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise and is the ideal place for hiking, skiing, canoeing, and rafting.
Lappeenranta serves as the perfect jumping-off place to Finland’s outdoor playground, and for trips to nearby Russia. It is also the place to experience traditional culture and relax in a Finnish sauna after exploring.
