Santiago and Temuco, Chile
Santiago, the capital of Chile, is located on the Mapocho River. It is the political, commercial, and financial heart of the nation. The city was founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia between the hill of Santa Lucia and the Mapocho River; today the city has spread over a broad valley plain and is one of the largest cities in South America. The snowcapped Andes form a spectacular backdrop to the East. Buildings from the colonial era remain, but the atmosphere of Santiago is modern. Spacious parks, plazas, gardens and wide avenues allow for peaceful strolls. The city is also home to several major sports stadiums, hotspots during the soccer season.
Temuco is located 430 miles south of Santiago, and is found in a beautifully forested region of Chile. The region has a high population of Chile’s indigenous people, the Mapuche.
The Andes provide outdoor adventures galore, with choices including hiking, trekking, climbing, kayaking, horseback riding, and skiing. Chile offers the best of all worlds, beaches and mountains, active volcanoes, fjords, and glaciers.
